호주 최장수 할아버지 ‘알피 데이트’의 은밀한 취미

2016년 세상을 떠난 ‘알피 데이트’는 약 110세의 나이까지 삶을 이어가며 호주의 가장 장수한 남성으로 알려졌다. 그는 세상을 떠나는 날까지 추위에 떠는 펭귄들을 위해 뜨개질로 스웨터를 만들며 시간을 보냈다.

약 110살이라는 나이에도 뜻이 있는 사람은 움직이기 마련. 그의 이런 사소롭지만 아름다운 행동은 빅토리아 주 ‘필립 섬’에서 일어난 기름 유출 이후 고통받는 어린 펭귄들을 돕기 위해 시작된 것으로 알려졌다. 기름 성분의 유출은 펭귄의 털을 뭉치게 해 내부 피부층으로 물이 침투하게되며 체온 조절이 어려워진다.

이와 같은 이유로 그는 뜨개질을 독학하기 시작했고 펭귄을 위한 스웨터를 디자인하기 시작했다. 그의 뜨개질 실력은 날이 갈수록 늘어갔고 그는 각각의 펭귄들에게 다양한 디자인의 스웨터를 짜주곤 했다.

Even at the remarkable age of 110, those with purpose find ways to act. His small yet beautiful gesture began as an effort to help young penguins suffering from an oil spill off Victoria’s Phillip Island. Oil contamination causes penguin feathers to clump together, allowing water to penetrate the inner layers of their skin, making it difficult for them to regulate body temperature.

Determined to make a difference, he taught himself how to knit and started designing sweaters specifically for penguins. As his knitting skills improved, he created a variety of uniquely designed sweaters for each penguin in need.
