뉴욕 공유 자전거로 선보이는 광란의 질주 <City Bike Boys>

맨해튼, 브루클린, 퀸즈 등등 뉴욕에서 사용 가능한 공유바이크 시스템 ‘시티바이크’는 서울의 ‘따릉이’ 후쿠오카의 ‘차리차리’와 같이 도시를 대표하는 교통수단으로 자리잡아 있다. 뉴욕에서 활동하는 BMX 크루 ‘시티 바이크 보이즈(@citybikeboys)’는 상징적인 시티 바이크를 개조해 화려한 트릭과 도전으로 도심 곳곳을 누빈다.

이 크루는 2017년 스케이트 보더 ‘제롬 필(@j3rom3)’이 출퇴근을 위해 이용하던 공유 바이크를 이용해 LES 스케이트파크의 악명높은 이중 계단을 뛰어내리는 영상과 함께 시작되었다. 일반적으로 시티 바이크는 속도를 추구하는 일반적인 자전거에 비해 안정에 초점을 맞춘 자전거였고 이에 따라 무거운 무게를 자랑했기에 이 영상은 크게 바이럴 되며 유명해지기 시작했다.

그들은 이젠 BMX용으로 개조한 자전거와 함께 뉴욕에서 유명한 트릭 스팟들을 누비며 뉴욕과 시티바이크를 알리는데 큰 역할을 하고있다. 언뜻보면 철없는 젊은 이들의 장난으로 보일지 모르지만 그들의 퍼포먼스와 뉴욕 도심의 유쾌한 모습들은 분명 당신의 맘에 각인될 것이라 생각한다.


The CityBike system, available in areas like Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, has become an iconic mode of transport in New York, much like Seoul's 'Ttareungi' and Fukuoka's 'Chari Chari'. The City Bike Boys (@citybikeboys), a BMX crew based in New York, have taken the city's iconic bike-sharing system to new heights by customizing CityBikes and performing daring tricks throughout the city.

The crew's story began in 2017 when skateboarder Jerome Phil (@j3rom3) filmed himself using a CityBike, which he relied on for commuting, to ride down the infamous double staircases of LES Skatepark. Unlike regular bikes that focus on speed, CityBikes are designed with stability in mind, making them heavier and less nimble. This contrast made Jerome's video go viral, capturing the attention of many.

Today, the crew continues to ride customized BMX bikes in famous trick spots around New York, promoting both the city and the CityBike system. While their antics might seem like youthful mischief at first glance, their performances and the vibrant energy they bring to New York's streets will surely leave a lasting impression.
