역사상 가장 큰 규모의 사이버 절도, 주범은 북한 해커 ‘박진혁’

최근 대표적인 암호화폐 거래소 ‘바이비트(@bybit_official)’에서 일어난 역사상 가장 큰 액수의 사이버 강도 사건의 용의자로 북한 출신의 해커 박진혁이 지목되었다. 이번 일어난 강도 사건은 북한이 지원하는 해킹 부대 ‘리자루스 그룹’의 소행으로 의심되며 약 15억 달러(한화 약 2조1477억) 상당의 이더리움 코인이 절도되었다.

이번 주요 용의자로 지목받은 박진혁은 2020년부터 FBI 공개 수배 명단에 올라가 있다. 지금까지 수많은 사이버 범죄에 연루되어 있다. 그는 북한의 기술공학 분야 최고 대학인 김책공업종합대학 출신 엘리트로 북한 정찰총국 소속 요원으로 중국에서 활동하다 북한의 기업 ‘조선엑스포’에서 IT 업무를 수행했다. 이후 리자루스 그룹에 일원으로 소속되어 활동중인 것으로 알려졌다.

한편 이번 범행으로 거래소 바이비트는 운용 자산의 막대한 손해와 거래 대금 지급에 큰 타격이 입혀질 것으로 예상되었다. 하지만 바이비트는 해당 사건에 대해 고객 자금 문제에 대해 72시간 내로 처리했으며 운영에 중단 없이 계속되고 있다고 밝혔다. 덧붙혀 바이비트는 여전히 자본을 보유하고 있으며 해킹으로 인한 손실을 감당할 수 있는 충분한 자산을 보유하고 있다며 고객들을 안심시켰다.


A major cyber heist, the largest in history in terms of stolen funds, recently took place at the leading cryptocurrency exchange Bybit (@bybit_official). The primary suspect in this incident has been identified as Park Jin-hyok, a hacker from North Korea. The attack is believed to have been orchestrated by the Lazarus Group, a hacking unit supported by the North Korean government, resulting in the theft of approximately $1.5 billion worth of Ethereum (KRW 2.1477 trillion).

Park Jin-hyok, the main suspect, has been on the FBI's Most Wanted list since 2020 and has been linked to numerous cybercrimes. He is known to be an elite graduate of Kim Chaek University of Technology, North Korea's top institution for technical and engineering studies. He worked as an operative under North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau and was active in China before handling IT operations at Chosun Expo, a North Korean company. Later, he reportedly became a member of the Lazarus Group and has been engaged in cyber activities ever since.

As a result of this attack, Bybit was expected to suffer significant financial losses and major disruptions in processing transaction payments. However, the exchange announced that it had resolved customer fund-related issues within 72 hours and has continued its operations without interruption. Additionally, Bybit reassured its users that it retains sufficient capital to cover the losses from the hack and remains financially stable.
